NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 76-71 in overtime at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday night.

The second half ended tied at 64. Guard Connor Dickerson (fr. Marlton, NJ/Moorestown) made the second of two free throws, which knotted the score for the Profs. The score was tied two times in the overtime period before Rowan took the lead for good. Rutgers-Newark guard Quincy Rutherford (so. Harrison, NJ/Eastern Christian) had a foul shot at 2:54, which made the score 68-68.

The Profs went ahead 71-68 after a three-pointer (2:44) by guard Nick DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.). Forward Mark Isiofia-Thomas (sr. Newark, NJ/Marist) followed with two points at the line and cut the deficit to one (71-70) with 2:17 remaining.

The Profs clinched the victory with a 5-1 run to end the game. Guard DaRon Curry (sr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) contributed with four points and Dickerson had a free throw.

Rowan is 12-4 overall and 6-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Newark has a 9-7 record with a 2-7 conference mark.

DePersia scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Curry totaled 22 points and guard/forward Ramon Wright (sr. Newark, NJ/Irvington) chipped in with 15. Guard Rob DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) collected five rebounds and four assists. Dickerson had seven points and was five for eight from the line.

Isiofia-Thomas recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rutherford produced 16 points and eight boards. Guard Tyler Ofray (sr. Newark, NJ/Church Farm School (PA)) totaled 13 points and seven rebounds. Guard Mike Vick (so. Maplewood, NJ/East Brunswick) added six points, five boards and five assists.

Rutgers-Newark led by 13 points (27-14) at 6:31 in the first half. Rowan scored 11 straight points to pull within two points (27-25) at 2:01. Nick DePersia had five points in the run. With four seconds on the clock, Curry made a layup and the Profs trailed 33-28 at the intermission.

The score was tied six times and there were 10 lead changes in the second stanza. The Profs were ahead 60-55 at 4:23 with a layup from Wright. Rutherford had a basket and foul shot to trail 60-58 (4:11). Thomas’ jumper tied the score at 60 with 3:28 left. The Scarlet Raiders took the lead ​62-60 after Rutherford’s layup at 2:53. Nick DePersia hit a three (2:42) to take back the lead (63-62). Guard Chase Barneys (jr. Woodbridge, NJ/Colonia) put Rutgers-Newark back on top 64-63 with a basket at 1:34 before Dickerson’s tying foul shot.

Next week, Rowan is home against Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 8 p.m. and New Jersey City University on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m.
