MEDFORD >> The Medford Blue Devils defeated Southampton, 11-10, to capture the 5th-8th grade Shawnee Seneca Softball Conference Championship for the second straight year June 2 at the Hartford Softball Complex here.

The Blue Devils went undefeated during the regular season to earn the top seed in the playoffs. They defeated Medford Lakes, 16-4, in the opening game. In the semifinals they won against Southampton 11-5, only to play them again in the championship game.

“The girls played with heart all season and during the playoffs. They all contributed to help win another championship for the Blue Devils. The team was aggressive in the field and on the bases, finding ways to get on base and score runs any way they could. Our pitching was consistent during the regular season and continued throughout the playoffs. We were behind early in the game, but the girls never gave up. In the final inning with the tying runner on third base, we needed just one more out and it came down to an exciting play at the plate it. I am so happy for the girls, they put in several months of practice and it helped them win this championship. I am grateful for the support of all the parents during the season and the help from coach Melissa Toy, together as a team we are champions,” said Medford head coach Andre Caldini.
